Clinical Breast Exams

Assess your breast health, examine any changes, and include a manual and visual exam of your breasts. Breast Self-Exam (BSE) and mammograms will also be discussed during your visit.

First step

The first step is a pelvic exam, where the provider feels the size and position of your uterus, like what you would experience during a routine GYN exam.

Second step

In the second step, the provider will numb the surface of your cervix by injecting a local anesthetic (at the opening to the uterus).

Third step

The third step is a gradual stretching of the opening of your cervix, called dilation. The provider will open your cervix just enough to insert a sterile tube through the cervix, into the uterus.

Final step

The final step is vacuum aspiration. The sterile tube is connected to an aspiration device, which creates suction and removes the pregnancy.
After the aspiration, you will rest for 20-30 minutes in our recovery room, where our team cares for you and gives aftercare instructions and medications.

Abortion FAQs

Abortion Safety

Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States each year. More than 25% of all women will end a pregnancy by abortion at some time in their reproductive lives. There is a lot of misinformation about the safety of abortion, but in fact there are fewer medical risks associated with abortion than with a full-term pregnancy and delivery.

Abortion Facts

Our providers have been performing Procedural Abortions at Equality Health Center since 1974, and Medication Abortions since 2000. Less than 1% of abortions result in complications. Most complications are minor and do not have adverse long-term effects on health or fertility. There is no greater risk with two or more abortions than there is with one abortion.

Abortion Myths

Anti-abortion activists claim that having an abortion increases the risk of developing breast cancer and endangers future childbearing. They claim that people who have abortions without complications will have difficulty conceiving or carrying future pregnancies, will develop ectopic (outside of the uterus) pregnancies, will deliver stillborn babies, or will become sterile. None of these claims are supported by medical research.

Under 18 and need an abortion?

Down arrow
Parental Notification Law
The New Hampshire Law requires that one parent or legal guardian, chosen by you, be notified that you are choosing to have an abortion. They do not have to agree with your decision, but they must be notified of your intent. If you don’t think you can tell them, you have the option to ask a judge to excuse you from this requirement. The procedure is called a “judicial bypass.”

If your parent or guardian is coming with you to the appointment, they can sign a statement at Equality Health Center indicating that they were notified.

If your parent or guardian cannot come with you to the clinic you still have several choices:
  • If your parent/guardian knows about your appointment, they must fill out and sign a Parental Notification form in front of a Notary Public. This form is available from our office, by mail, fax, e-mail or may be downloaded here. No matter how you obtain the form, you must bring the original signed and notarized form with you, on the day you come for your appointment.
  • We can send a notification letter to the parent/guardian of your choice by the U.S. postal service certified mail, return receipt requested with restricted delivery, to the address of your chosen parent/legal guardian. This notice must be sent at least 48 hours before your appointment. Before we can send the notification, we must have a Minor Consent Release form signed by you giving us permission to send it. This form is available from our office, by mail, fax, e-mail or may be downloaded here.
  • If you feel that you cannot tell your parent/guardian that you are pregnant and that you believe an abortion is the best option for you, you can get a waiver of notification or judicial bypass. We can connect you with an attorney at no cost to you, to represent you during the court proceedings. You are not alone. The court proceeding will take place within 48 hours of your attorney filling the request for the waiver. If the judge decides you are capable of understanding and giving an informed consent for the abortion, or if the judge decides that not involving a parent/guardian is in your best interest, they will grant you the waiver.
An unintended pregnancy can feel overwhelming. If you are not sure about your options, call us. We will give you accurate, unbiased information so that you can make an informed choice about what is best for you.
